Crete University Press was founded in 1985, when the Pancretan Association of America decided to bestow the annual interest of a fund totalling $500,000, compiled by voluntary contributions from the Association’s members, for the funding of a university press modeled upon similar publishing houses of the Anglo-saxon countries.
Under an agreement between the Pancretan Association and the Foundation for Research and Technology (FORTH), Crete University Press (CUP) operates as an independent non-profit publishing house within the Foundation’s framework, receiving infrastructure and accounting services support. The funding of CUP’s publishing activity is based for the most part (approximately 90%) on revenue from book sales and for the remainder on the annual financial support from FORTH and the Pancretan Association of America.
The primary publishing objectives of CUP are:
• The creation of a corpus of scientific bibliography in the greek language, on a par with the highest international standards.
• The publishing support of scientific research on greek culture.
• The diffusion of scientific knowledge to the lay public (popularization of science).
The Director of CUP is Stefanos Trachanas, assisted by
• The Editorial Board -G. M. Sifakis, E. N. Economou, P. Ditsas, Chr. Chadjiiosif- for matters of general editorial policies and practices.
• The Divisional Editors, for matters of specific publication decisions.
