Free verse has dominated poetry in the last fifty years and the result was a waning of interest in questions of metrics. Until recently, research has largely ignored them, while at university level, the study of metrics is pretty basic. Nevertheless, the knowledge of metrics is essential to the study of poetry, both in metrical form and in free verse. More specifically, the study of of both free verse and prose poetry should be based on the study of metrics since the literariness of such forms is the result of processes that conform to some kind of metre –according to a pattern less unrestricted by metrical considerations than generally believed, but one which is actually dictated by a discipline no less rigid, even though it may not be easy to identify. More to the point: the knowledge of metrics is a precondition for the study of literature in general, since literariness cannot be understood  independently of the kind of relationship between the semiotic units, in which metre is the most condensed and visible form.
The term ‘narrative grammar’ that has prevailed in the study of prose narrative is less precise than the term ‘narrative metrics’ which should have replaced it, being less metaphorical. In reality the whole of literature is metrical, if we extend the meaning of metre to encompass  the harmonic pattern of repetitions, parallelisms, correspondences, deviations and contrasts that transforms ordinary laguage into poetic language. In times such as ours of centrifugal theoretical tendencies, the centripede direction of the metrical study is a gage for every theoretical approach to literature that aspires to be truly literary.
The present volume is part of the outcome of the research project ‘Archive of Modern Greek Metrics’  undertaken at Institute of Medieval Studies of the Crete Research Centre. The research project does not have a strictly specified research target or superfluous ambitions. Its aim is to to collect and present the work of scholars in the field of Modern Greek literature which demonstrate that the interest in metrical questions has revived in recent years. The editor of the volume is pleased that the volume provided the impetus for these metrical studies.
